French Open semi-final preview: Will Timea Bacsinszky or Jelena Ostapenko win the battle of the birthdays?

Timea Bacsinszky and Jelena Ostapenko booked their places in the semi-finals of the French Open on Day 10 and both are now fighting for a piece of history.

No on remaining in the draw has won a Grand Slam title and these two stars were hardly even mentioned as possible winners prior to the tournament’s beginning.

Ranked at 47 and 31 in the world, the pair were rank outsiders even heading towards the last-16 but both will now play for a place in the showpiece match of 2017.

Here we take a look at the match-up and offer a prediction as to who will come out on top…

Extra present on the line for the birthday girls

It’s rare enough to get one player competing in a Grand Slam semi-final on her birthday, but to have two is downright extraordinary.

Ostapenko will be leaving her teenage years behind her, while Bacsinszky will be turning 28 as both look to reach a Grand Slam final for the first time.

One will be left with the birthday blues, while the other will be gifted an extra present on Thursday.

How have they reached this stage?

The 19-year-old has shown great grit in her matches ahead of this stage – coming from behind on three occasions.

Considering two of those were against former US Open champion Sam Stosur and ex-world No. 1 Wozniacki,

Ostapenko has proven she has all the fight needed to battle on the biggest stage.

    Routes to semi-finals

    R1: 4-6 6-3 6-3 Chirico
    R2: 6-3 6-2 Puig
    R3: 6-1 6-4 Tsurenko
    R4: 2-6 6-2 6-4 Stosur
    QF: 4-6 6-2 6-2 Wozniacki
    R1: 6-1 6-2 Sorribes Tormo
    R2: 6-0 6-2 Brengle
    R3: 6-2 6-2 Jabeur
    R4: 5-7 6-2 6-1 Williams
    QF: 6-4 6-4 Mladenovic

Into her second semi-final at Roland Garros, Bacsinszky has also beaten some tough opponents, although she’s largely controlled every match she’s played.

Even against Venus Williams, she was ahead comfortably in the only set she lost and then blew the American away to reach the quarter-finals.

This will be the first meeting between the pair, which certainly makes it all the more difficult to pick a winner.
However, while they’ve never been across the net from one another, they have stood on the same side.

    What’s their head-to-head like?

Ostapenko: We are good friends, because we played the doubles in China last year, and that’s how I got to know her.

She’s a really nice person. Both of us will have the birthday, so I’m really looking forward to the match.

Her game is very different. She can mix it up a lot. She can play aggressive. Also, she can change the rhythm and everything. And I think I have to just stay aggressive and to just play my game.

Bacsinszky: I saw her in the gym just right after our matches today, and so we both said, like, mutually to each other, Well done. We hugged each other, because, I mean, she’s a really nice girl. To me, she was all the time very nice.

We practiced quite a few times together, too. I was happy for her that she was in the semifinal, as well.

And that we are sharing the same birthday. But lucky her, she’s way younger than I am.

But maybe lucky me, experience–wise, I don’t know. But anyway, I think those stories are just very good and nice. You guys have something to talk about.

This is, again, incredibly difficult to saw but when I saw the quarter-finals set I though Bacsinszky would be the one to get there and I’ll stick with that now.

The Swiss has been in fantastic form throughout the tournament and looks hugely impressive.

Her semi-final loss to Serena in 2015 is certainly nothing to be ashamed of but she will fancy her chances this time around.

Ostapenko is a dangerous and gritty opponent, though, and it may have to be done in three.

    Prediction: Bacsinszky in 3
